Grandolyn Edna May[1] is a major antagonist in WordGirl.
She uses the alias Granny May when committing crimes. She poses as a sweet, hard-of-hearing elderly woman, but really is a master thief. Everyone but WordGirl is usually fooled by this charade. The devious granny once even managed to turn the entire city against WordGirl until the heroine was able to expose her as a liar ("Down with Word Up").
She was voiced by Wanda Sykes in The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl, and later by Cree Summer in the full episode series.
She has the same Resemblance of Ma Parker From the 1960's Batman
Appearance[]
Granny May is African-American and has greyish-white hair tied into a bun held with her knitting needles. She wears a long sleeved pink dress with white lace cuffs, a yellow belt, a white pearl necklace and blue flats.
Personality[]
She's a elderly lady who's devious, angry, manipulative and evil.
Weapons[]
Her main weapon of choice is her knitting needles that she keeps in her hair. In use, they shoot out nearly unbreakable purple yarn that she can use to bind someone in place, grab things from a distance (in a whip-like fashion) and even shape-shift as objects such as a make-shift trampoline.
She's also equipped with a perfume strong enough to render anyone weak and helpless, along with blinding stale purse mints.
Most notably, Granny May possesses a large cutting-edge steel suit of armor with a jet pack which she activates by touching her pearl necklace. With it, she can fly around a lot faster with a heavy defense. It is also equipped with an air conditioning feature that she uses in "Heat Wave, Crime Wave" to move around in sweltering-hot days. It only limits itself when it needs to be refilled with fuel.
History[]
She has her large but timid grandson Eugene May who used to help her commit crimes, but he no longer does thanks to Violet's kindness to befriend the shy boy.
Granny May's mother is, surprisingly, still alive, as is shown in the episode "Great Granny May". Her mother doesn't approve of her daughter's criminal escapades, but she's genuinely hearing-impaired and not quite as alert, so when Granny May was put into house arrest with her mother, Granny May managed to escape while her mom was out. It's revealed in the episode "Granny's Book Club" that she's 75 years old, as all villains were required to retire at that age unless they could capture WordGirl.
